The official JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility Criteria has been released by IIT Roorkee. This year includes an important rule that affects thousands of aspirants — especially those who accepted IIT seats but did not join.

This blog explains the eligibility, exam date, NOT ALLOWED rule, category-wise criteria, and key warnings students must know.

📅 JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Date

IIT Roorkee has officially announced:

🗓 JEE Advanced 2026 Date:17 May 2026 (Sunday)

The exam will be conducted in two papers in computer-based mode across India.

1. Who Is Eligible for JEE Advanced 2026?

To appear for JEE Advanced 2026, candidates must meet all the following rules:

✔ 1. Performance in JEE Main 2026

Only the top 2,50,000 students across categories in JEE Main 2026 are eligible.

Approximate category distribution:

  • OPEN: ~96,000

  • OPEN-PwD: ~4,800

  • GEN-EWS: ~24,900

  • GEN-EWS-PwD: ~1,300

  • OBC-NCL: ~67,500

  • OBC-NCL-PwD: ~3,600

  • SC: ~37,500

  • SC-PwD: ~1,900

  • ST: ~18,500

  • ST-PwD: ~1,000

✔ 2. Age Criteria

Candidates must be born on or after October 1, 2005 (age relaxation applies for SC/ST/PwD).

✔ 3. Number of Attempts

You can attempt JEE Advanced two times in two consecutive years.

✔ 4. Appearance in Class 12

Candidates must have passed Class 12th in:

  • 2024, or

  • 2025

2. Most Important Rule: Who Is NOT ALLOWED in JEE Advanced 2026?

This is the rule confusing many students.

If you were allotted ANY IIT seat in JoSAA 2025 and you accepted the seat but did NOT join/report, you are NOT eligible for JEE Advanced 2026.

This includes cases such as:

  • Paid the acceptance fee but did not report

  • Accepted the IIT seat but didn’t complete admission

  • Did not appear for physical/online reporting

👉 IIT considers this as one attempt used, meaning you cannot appear again for JEE Advanced 2026.

✔ Who IS Allowed Even After Being Allotted a Seat?

You are still eligible if:

✔ You were allotted an IIT seat but did NOT ACCEPT it

(no freeze/float/slide, no fee payment)

✔ You got a seat in NITs/IIITs but not IITs

You remain fully eligible.

3. Foreign Nationals

Foreign nationals have separate eligibility rules and are not part of the 2.5 lakh count.
